Review-Math Essentials

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

We recently received the addition, multiplication, and division Math Essentials Speed Wheel Drills from Math Essentials.

Each Math Essentials Speed Wheel Drills book contains over ONE THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED math drills designed to practice and master math facts.

Now normally, my family is not so big on math workbooks. Problem after problem with no end in sight? No thanks-that’s a pretty boring prospect.

However, Math Essential Speed Wheel Drills are not ordinary workbooks. Each page contains twelve wheels of math problems each of which are focused on a single fact.

Students can time themselves, check their own work, and see their improvement as they progress through the book.

In our family, we don’t really have anyone that needs to practice addition, but my daughter used the division speed wheel drills just for fun without timing herself. She has a good grasp on division as she is now in high school, but I am not going to complain if she wants to practice math!

My eleven year old son is the one needing the most practice, and he spent a lot of time working through the multiplication book-which we treated like a game. My son (who normally hates anything timed) dove right into the challenge and had the best time competing with himself to improve his times and memorize math facts.

I was surprised, but he really has enjoyed completing the speed wheels, and told me he likes them even better than his regular math (which he really likes.)

I have already seen an improvement in The Boy’s math skills. I really believe it’s not only because he is completing the math problems, but because he is self-checking his work which means he is constantly looking at the multiplication chart. Whether he realizes it or not, this is helping him to memorize the facts. He is getting faster at recalling the answers, and I have to admit I am impressed.

Another great feature is the bonus math tips at the back of each book. There are several pages of helpful facts (like vocabulary terms, important symbols, multiplication charts, fraction/decimal equivalents, etc.) that can be torn out and used for reference long after the book is completed.

The Math Essential Speed Wheel Drills are great for a summer refresh, or as a break from a regular math curriculum.

And, if you have a student that needs some extra spiral practice when it comes to math (like my kiddo), then this makes a great supplement to curriculum as well.

I am very glad we tried these, and there are so many wheels in each book, I will easily be able to pass this book down to The Little Guy when he gets older, and The Boy can move on to the division book! Very cool.
